Gather Your Supplies
First things first, you’ll need to get a few items together. Don’t worry, you probably already have these around the house:
- A plastic bag big enough to fit over your shower head
- White vinegar
- Rubber band or twist tie
- An old toothbrush (optional)

Let’s move on.
Remove the Shower head (Optional)
If you’d like to give your shower head a more thorough cleaning, consider removing it entirely. Most shower heads can be unscrewed by hand or with a wrench (just be careful not to scratch anything).
This step is optional, though, if you’re pressed for time or just can’t be bothered!
Bag the Shower head
Fill the plastic bag with white vinegar until it’s about halfway full. Carefully place the bag over the shower head, ensuring the entire head is submerged in vinegar.
Use the rubber band or twist tie to securely fasten the bag around the top of the shower head. That’s it—your shower head is now soaking in the vinegar, which will help dissolve all that pesky mineral buildup.
Wait It Out
Now, for the best part: do nothing. Simply let the shower head soak in the vinegar for at least 10 minutes.
If it’s covered in gunk, you might want to wait a bit longer. Use this break for some “me” time—grab a snack, catch up on your favorite show, or scroll through social media.
Remove The Bag and Rinse
After your wait time is up, carefully remove the bag of vinegar, being cautious not to spill any. Turn on the shower to rinse off the vinegar and any loosened mineral deposits.
If there’s still some stubborn gunk, use that old toothbrush to gently scrub it away.
