Suggestions for Ingredient Substitution
Cooked shredded chicken can be replaced with cooked turkey, diced firm tofu, or chickpeas for vegetarian options. These alternatives provide similar protein content and can absorb flavors well. Adjust seasoning as needed for tofu or chickpeas. Stovetop stuffing mix can be substituted with homemade bread cubes seasoned with herbs for a fresher taste and control over ingredients. Use about 4 cups of cubed bread and add poultry seasoning to mimic the stuffing flavor. Cream of chicken soup can be swapped with cream of mushroom soup for a vegetarian version, or a homemade white sauce using vegetable broth, flour, and milk for a lower-sodium option. Adjust liquid content if using homemade sauce to maintain the right consistency in the casserole.

- 2 cans cream of chicken soup
- 1/4 cup milk

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Dish and Chicken Layer
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Use nonstick cooking spray to coat a 13×9 glass baking dish.
Place 2 cups of cooked shredded chicken evenly in the baking dish.

Dash onion and herb seasoning for added flavor.
Step 2: Make the Stuffing
Prepare the stovetop stuffing mix by following the package instructions.
Combine hot water with the stuffing mix in a bowl and stir until the mixture is evenly combined.
Microwave the stuffing mixture on high for 5 to 6 minutes and let it sit in the microwave to steam for optimal texture.
Step 3: Mix and Layer the Soup Mixture
In a large bowl, combine 2 cans of cream of chicken soup (preferably fat-free) with ¼ cup of milk.
Stir until the mixture is evenly combined.
Pour this soup mixture over the shredded chicken in the baking dish.

After this, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes uncovered to allow the top to crisp slightly.
Step 5: Cool and Serve
Once the casserole is fully baked, carefully remove it from the oven.
Allow the casserole to cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving, which helps the layers set and enhances the overall flavor.
Enjoy your hearty and comforting dish!
