Preparation Time | 20-30 minutes |
Cooking Time | 60-75 minutes |
Total Time | 80-105 minutes |
Level of Difficulty | Medium |
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground pork
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 cup cooked and cooled rice
- 2 cups fresh tomato sauce (or marinara sauce or small diced tomatoes)
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp ground caraway seeds
- 1 tsp majoron (or thyme)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- 1 head cabbage, chopped
- 1 tsp whole caraway seeds
- Olive oil, for cooking
- Nonstick spray or olive oil, for baking
- Cheese, for topping (quantity not specified)
Step 1: Prepare Ingredients and Season the Pork
Gather all your ingredients: ground pork, diced onion, cooked and cooled rice, fresh tomato sauce (or marinara/small diced tomatoes), paprika, ground caraway seeds, marjoram (or thyme), garlic, salt, pepper, cabbage, and whole caraway seeds.
Season the ground pork with ground caraway seeds, paprika, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the spices.
Step 2: Cook Onions, Garlic, and Ground Pork
Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
Add the diced onions and cook until translucent, about 5 to 10 minutes.
Then, add the minced garlic and marjoram (or thyme) and cook for an additional 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Add the seasoned ground pork to the pan and cook on high heat for about 5 minutes, breaking it up with a wooden spoon until the meat is browned.
Season with additional salt and pepper if needed.
Step 3: Add Tomato Sauce and Cook Rice
Pour the tomato sauce into the meat mixture.
If the sauce is watery, cook it down without a lid for about 20 minutes until it thickens.
Once the sauce has thickened, stir in the cooked rice and mix well.
Remove from heat and set aside.
Step 4: Cook the Cabbage
Chop the cabbage into medium-sized chunks.
Season it with whole caraway seeds, salt, pepper, and a little olive oil.
In a pot, add the cabbage with a bit of water to prevent burning and cook until the cabbage is halfway done, allowing it to reduce in volume.
Step 5: Layer the Casserole
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Spray a casserole dish with nonstick spray or olive oil.
Start layering the casserole by placing a layer of cabbage at the bottom of the dish, followed by a layer of the meat mixture.
Add another layer of cabbage, and finish with the remaining meat mixture on top.
Step 6: Bake and Finish the Casserole
Cover the casserole dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes.
After baking, carefully remove the foil using oven mitts and sprinkle cheese on top.
Return the casserole to the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Enjoy your stuffed cabbage casserole!
