Preparation Time | 30-45 minutes |
Cooking Time | 10-15 minutes |
Total Time | 40-60 minutes |
Level of Difficulty | Medium |
Ingredients
- 10 snowflake sugar cookies
- 1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
- 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- Red food coloring
- Green food coloring
- Yellow food coloring
- 1 tbsp americolor lemon yellow
- 2-3 tbsp americolor leaf green
- 3 drops americolor soft pink
- 3-5 drops super red
Step 1: Prepare and Bake Sugar Cookies
Start by preparing a batch of rolled sugar cookies using a six-pointed snowflake cookie cutter.
Follow your sugar cookie recipe’s instructions for baking and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack once done.
Step 2: Make the Frosting Base
In a medium-sized bowl, cream together 1/4 cup of softened butter or margarine and 1/4 cup of vegetable shortening using the back of a spoon until smooth and well combined.
Add 1 tablespoon of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the creamed mixture.
Gradually mix in 2 cups of powdered sugar a little at a time until the frosting is smooth and lump-free.
Continue mixing until all the powdered sugar is well incorporated and the frosting reaches a smooth consistency.
Step 3: Divide and Color the Frosting
Divide the frosting into three portions: one tablespoon for the stam, a couple of tablespoons for the leaves, and the rest for the flowers.
For the stam, color the frosting with 1 drop of Americolor Lemon Yellow.
For the leaves, color the frosting with 2-3 drops of Americolor Leaf Green.
For the flowers, start by adding 3 drops of Americolor Soft Pink to the remaining frosting and mix.
Gradually add 3-5 drops of Super Red to the pink frosting until the desired red color is achieved.
Cover the colored frostings with a damp kitchen towel and let them sit for about an hour to deepen the colors.
Step 4: Pipe the Leaves and Petals
Transfer the green frosting into a piping bag fitted with a Wilton #366 decorating tip.
Pipe leaf shapes onto the cookies by gently squeezing the bag and pulling back as you ease up on the pressure.
For the flower petals, transfer the red frosting into a piping bag fitted with the same Wilton #366 tip.
Start in between the green leaves and pipe petals around the snowflake.
For the center of the flowers, pipe five petals straight up and down in the center, allowing them to stand up.
Step 5: Add the Stams and Finish
Transfer the yellow frosting into a plastic baggie and snip off a small corner.
Pipe small dots in the center of each flower to create the stam.
Allow the cookies to dry for a few hours before arranging them on a cookie platter for serving.
Enjoy your beautifully decorated snowflake sugar cookies!
