Preparation Time 15-20 minutes
Cooking Time 30-60 minutes
Total Time 45-80 minutes
Level of Difficulty Medium

Ingredients

  • 1 can (10.75 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup finely chopped white onion
  • 2 pounds lightly steamed fresh broccoli florets
  • 8 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Ground black pepper (to taste)
  • Paprika (to taste)
  • Crushed potato chips or buttered crackers (for topping)
  • Melted butter or cooking spray (for greasing the baking dish)

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare Baking Dish

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

While the oven is heating up, grease a 9 by 13 inch baking dish with melted butter or cooking spray to ensure your casserole doesn’t stick.

Step 2: Combine Base Ingredients

In a large bowl, add one 10.75 ounce can of condensed cream of mushroom soup (or cream of broccoli soup if you prefer).

Next, add 1/2 cup of mayonnaise and substitute the other half cup with sour cream.

Add one beaten egg and finely chopped white onion (1/4 to 1/2 cup).

Whisk everything together until well combined.

Step 3: Add Broccoli and Cheese

Add two pounds of lightly steamed fresh broccoli florets (or three 10 ounce packages of frozen chopped broccoli) to the mixture.

If you prefer, you can use half broccoli and half cauliflower.

Add eight ounces of shredded sharp cheddar cheese.

Season the mixture with salt, ground black pepper, and paprika to taste, then gently combine all the ingredients together.

Step 4: Transfer to Baking Dish

Transfer the combined mixture to your prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

For a crunchy topping, optionally sprinkle crushed potato chips or buttered crackers on top of the casserole.

Step 5: Bake the Casserole

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven.

If using fresh broccoli, bake the casserole for 30 to 40 minutes.

If using frozen broccoli, bake for 45 to 60 minutes until the top is golden and the casserole is heated through.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

Once the casserole is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.

Enjoy your delicious broccoli casserole as a hearty side dish or a main course!
