Preparation Time 90-120 minutes
Cooking Time 10-12 minutes
Total Time 100-132 minutes
Level of Difficulty Medium

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups plain flour
  • 1 1/4 sticks unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 1/2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for coating the baked cookies)

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients and Mix the Dough

Put 1 and 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 and 1/4 sticks of unsalted butter cut into pieces, 3 and 1/2 tablespoons of heavy cream, and 1 egg yolk in a large mixing bowl.

Start by using a fork to combine the egg yolk and heavy cream with the flour.

Then, use your fingers to mix the dough until it forms crumbs.

Transfer the mixture to a work surface and quickly knead it into a smooth, soft dough.

If the dough is too sticky, dust it with a little flour while kneading.

Step 2: Shape and Refrigerate the Dough

Once the dough holds together, stop kneading it.

Shape the dough into a cylinder and wrap it in plastic wrap.

Place it in the refrigerator for one and a half hours to chill.

This step allows the incorporated butter to firm up, making it easier to roll out without sticking to your rolling pin or requiring much flour for dusting.

Step 3: Roll and Cut the Dough

After the dough has rested and become semi-firm, roll it out to about 1/8 inch (0.3 mm) thick on a work surface.

Use cookie cutters to cut out various shapes, opting for smaller shapes if possible for better consistency.

Transfer the cookie cutouts to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Use a thin pastry scraper to lift the cookies without damaging their shape.

Step 4: Bake the Cookies

Place the baking sheet in an oven preheated to 360°F (182°C).

Bake the cookies for about 10-12 minutes, or until they turn lightly golden.

Keep an eye on them to avoid over-baking, which can cause them to become too hard.

Step 5: Cool and Sugar the Cookies

Transfer the baked cookies to a wire rack and let them cool for about five minutes.

While the cookies are still warm, coat each piece generously with 1/2 cup of powdered sugar.

This will add a delightful sweetness and create a beautiful finish.

Enjoy your delicious homemade cookies!
