Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup cottage cheese
- Egg yolk (for glazing)
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Begin by preheating your oven to 425°F (220°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the biscuits.
Step 2: Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar.
Whisk these dry ingredients together until they are well mixed and evenly distributed.
Step 3: Cut in the Shortening
Add 1/4 cup of vegetable shortening to the bowl with the dry ingredients.
Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the shortening into the mixture until it resembles coarse meal.
This will help create a flaky texture in the biscuits.
Step 4: Mix in Wet Ingredients
Next, add 2 eggs and 1/2 cup of milk to the bowl, followed by 1 cup of cottage cheese.
Mix everything together until just combined to form a batter.
Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the biscuits tough.
Step 5: Knead and Cut the Dough
Transfer the mixture to a floured surface and gently knead it about 5 to 6 times until it reaches a workable consistency.
Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick.
Use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits and place them on a lightly greased baking sheet.
Step 6: Brush and Bake
Brush the tops of the biscuits with egg yolk to give them a beautiful golden color when baked.
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 16 to 20 minutes, keeping an eye on them until they are golden brown.
Step 7: Cool and Serve
Once baked, remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
Enjoy your delicious homemade biscuits!
