Preparation Time 20-30 minutes
Cooking Time 30-45 minutes
Total Time 50-75 minutes
Level of Difficulty Medium

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks butter, melted
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 pound elbow macaroni, cooked and drained
  • 6 servings instant mashed potatoes
  • 16 slices american cheese
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare Ingredients

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a bowl, melt 2 sticks of butter.

Once the butter is melted, add 1 sliced onion to it and mix well to combine the flavors.

Step 2: Layer the Macaroni and Butter Mixture

In a baking dish, evenly layer half of 1 pound of cooked and drained elbow macaroni.

Drizzle about a third of the butter and onion mixture over the macaroni, ensuring it is evenly distributed.

Step 3: Add Cheese and Mashed Potatoes

On top of the buttered macaroni, layer half of 16 slices of American cheese.

Prepare 6 servings of instant mashed potatoes according to package instructions and spread half of them evenly over the cheese layer.

Season the mashed potatoes with house seasoning, typically a mixture of salt and pepper, to taste.

Drizzle another third of the butter and onion mixture over the seasoned mashed potatoes.

Step 4: Repeat the Layering Process

Repeat the layering process by adding the remaining cooked macaroni on top, drizzling the last third of the butter and onion mixture over it.

Then layer the remaining American cheese slices, and finally spread the remaining mashed potatoes on top, making sure the layer is even and without thick spots.

Step 5: Bake and Serve

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake until the edges are crispy and golden, which should take about 30 minutes.

Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.

Enjoy your baked pierogi casserole!
