Possible Ingredient Alternatives
For those seeking a non-alcoholic version, the red wine and brandy can be replaced with grape juice and apple juice respectively. This substitution maintains the fruity flavor profile while making the recipe family-friendly. Adjust the spice quantities to taste, as juices may require more seasoning than alcohol.
Orange gelatin can be substituted with unflavored gelatin and natural orange extract or zest for a less processed option. Use an equal amount of unflavored gelatin and add orange extract to taste, starting with 1/2 teaspoon.
For a vegan alternative, replace both gelatin packets with agar-agar powder. Use about 2 teaspoons of agar-agar powder per cup of liquid. Agar-agar requires boiling to activate, so adjust the preparation method accordingly. This substitution creates a similar texture while accommodating plant-based diets.

Ingredients
- 3 whole black peppercorns
- 3 whole cloves
- 1 whole star anise
- 1 stick of cinnamon
- 1 cup red wine
- 1 cup hot water
- 1/2 cup brandy
- 1/2 cup cool water
- 1 packet orange gelatin
- 1 packet plain gelatin
Step 1: Prepare the Spice Packet
Begin by bundling cloves, peppercorns, cinnamon, and star anise in a piece of cheesecloth.
Tie the ends tightly together to secure the spices in a packet.
This will allow them to infuse while being easy to remove later.
Step 2: Mulled Wine Infusion
In a saucepan, add your choice of wine along with the prepared spice packet.
Set the heat to low and let it cook gently for 1 hour.
Then, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.
Let the spice-infused wine sit overnight in the refrigerator to deepen the flavors.
Once infused, remove the spice packet from the wine.
Step 3: Dissolve Jell-O in Boiling Water
In a mixing bowl, combine the two Jell-O powders with boiling water.
Stir continuously until all of the Jell-O mix has completely dissolved, ensuring a smooth and even mixture for setting later on.
Step 4: Combine Ingredients
Add the brandy, mulled wine, and cold water to the mixing bowl with the dissolved Jell-O.
Stir well until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined, ensuring a consistent mixture for the shots.
Step 5: Pour and Set the Jello Shots
Carefully pour the liquid mixture into plastic shot glasses, filling each one until they are three-quarters full.
Place the filled shot glasses in the refrigerator and chill for two hours, or until the mixture has fully set and solidified.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
Once the jello shots are set, they are ready to serve.
Enjoy this festive treat as a delightful addition to any gathering or celebration!
