Suggestions for Ingredient Substitution
Minced beef can be replaced with ground turkey or plant-based meat alternatives for a leaner or vegetarian option. Adjust cooking time slightly, as turkey may cook faster than beef. For plant-based substitutes, follow package instructions for browning.
Condensed cream of potato soup can be substituted with condensed cream of mushroom or celery soup for different flavor profiles. Alternatively, make a homemade white sauce using milk, flour, and butter for a fresher taste and control over ingredients.
Frozen mixed vegetables can be swapped with fresh, seasonal vegetables. Chop them into small, uniform pieces and briefly sauté before adding to the filling. This substitution allows for customization of vegetable types and ratios while potentially improving texture and nutritional value. Adjust cooking time as fresh vegetables may require less time to become tender.

Ingredients
- 1 package of pie crust (15 oz., containing two 9-inch crusts)
- 1 pound minced beef
- 2 cans condensed cream of potato soup (10.5 oz. each)
- 1 package mixed frozen vegetables (12 oz.)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon ground pepper
- Salt to taste
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon water
- Olive oil
Step 1: Preheat Oven and Cook Ground Beef
Preheat your oven to 400°F.
Meanwhile, heat a skillet on medium-high heat.
Add a drizzle of olive oil and wait until the oil is glistening.
Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook it until browned, stirring occasionally to break up the meat well.
Once fully cooked, drain any excess oil from the beef to avoid a greasy pie filling.
Step 2: Prepare Vegetables and Combine Filling Ingredients
If your vegetables are not pre-thawed, defrost them in the microwave at this time.
Once the ground beef is cooked and drained, transfer it to a medium bowl.
Add in the thawed vegetables, soups, thyme, garlic, black pepper, and the desired amount of salt.
Mix everything together thoroughly until the ingredients are well combined.
Step 3: Assemble the Pie
Place one pie crust into the bottom of a 9-inch pie pan.
Pour the beef and vegetable mixture into the crust, spreading it out evenly.
Top with the second pie crust, folding the edge of the top crust over the bottom crust.
Crimp and press the edges together firmly to seal the pie securely.
Step 4: Prepare the Pie for Baking
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and a little water to create an egg wash.
Brush this lightly over the top crust to promote even browning.
Make several small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
Step 5: Bake and Serve the Pie
Place the assembled pie in the preheated oven and bake for about 30-40 minutes, or until the pie crust is a lovely golden brown.
Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for several minutes.
This will make it easier to slice and serve.
Enjoy your freshly baked savory pie!
This turned out well, but I found it was very lacking in flavour.
