Ingredient Substitutions
For the minced beef, ground turkey or plant-based meat alternatives can be used to reduce fat content or accommodate vegetarian diets. Adjust cooking time slightly, as these options may cook faster than beef. Lentils or finely chopped mushrooms can also work as meat-free options, providing a similar texture and umami flavor.
Potatoes can be substituted with sweet potatoes for added nutrients or cauliflower florets for a low-carb alternative. Sweet potatoes may cook slightly faster, while cauliflower may require less cooking time to avoid becoming mushy.
Beef broth can be replaced with vegetable broth for a vegetarian version, or chicken broth for a different flavor profile. Use the same amount as called for in the recipe. For a richer taste, consider using bone broth, which also adds extra nutrients.

Ingredients
- 500g (1.1 lb) minced beef
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 2 teaspoons crushed garlic
- 2 diced carrots
- 2 diced celery stalks
- 4 peeled and chopped potatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
- 1 bay leaf
- 350ml (11.8 fl oz) beef broth
- 2 tablespoons tomato concentrate
- 800g (1.8 lb) canned crushed tomatoes
Step 1: Brown the Ground Beef
In a frypan over high heat, add the ground beef.
Cook until the beef is fully browned, breaking apart any chunks with a spatula.
Once browned, carefully drain any excess fluid.
Step 2: Prepare and Assemble Ingredients in Slow Cooker
Transfer the browned ground beef into a slow cooker.
Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, diced carrot, sliced celery, cubed potato, chopped parsley, oregano, Worcestershire sauce, a bay leaf, beef stock, tomato paste, and crushed tomatoes to the slow cooker.
Stir the ingredients gently to ensure they are well combined.
Step 3: Slow Cook the Mixture
Set the slow cooker to a low setting and cook the mixture for 8 hours.
This slow-cooking process will meld the flavors together, while tenderizing the vegetables and allowing the beef to infuse with the delicious blend of spices and herbs.
Step 4: Final Seasoning
After 8 hours, check the seasoning of the stew.
Add salt and pepper to taste, ensuring the flavors are balanced and to your liking.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy
Ladle the hearty stew into bowls and serve hot.
Enjoy the rich, flavorful dish that’s perfect for a cozy meal.
If there are any leftovers, they can be stored in the refrigerator and enjoyed the next day.
