Level of Difficulty | Easy |
Ingredients
- 1 cup cottage cheese
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 3 large potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp chives, chopped (for garnish)
- Cooking spray (for preparing the baking pan)
Step 1: Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Pan
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Coat the inside of an 8-inch square baking pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
Step 2: Prepare the Cottage Cheese Mixture
In a medium mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of cottage cheese with 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Stir well and set the mixture aside.
Step 3: Layer the Potatoes and Mixture
Place a thin layer of thinly sliced potatoes on the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
Top with 1/3 of the cottage cheese and heavy cream mixture, spreading it evenly over the potatoes. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon of bread crumbs along with salt and ground black pepper to taste.
Repeat this process, forming two more layers in the same manner.
Step 4: Finish the Top Layer and Bake
For the top layer, spread the remaining 1/2 cup of cottage cheese evenly over the last layer of potatoes.
Top with a thin layer of bread crumbs and sprinkle lightly with 1 teaspoon of paprika for added flavor and color.
Step 5: Bake and Garnish
Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is done.
Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for 15 to 20 minutes to set.
Garnish with chopped fresh chives before serving.
Serving Suggestions
For a classic meal, serve the Au Gratin alongside roasted chicken or a tender beef roast. It also complements grilled fish or pork chops beautifully.
Add a green vegetable, such as steamed asparagus or a fresh mixed salad, to create a balanced and visually appealing plate.
This dish is also perfect as a hearty vegetarian main course, especially when paired with a simple tomato basil salad or sautéed seasonal vegetables.
Serve it warm, and don’t forget to garnish with extra chopped chives for a burst of fresh flavor and a touch of elegance.
